The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) declared 2017 the year of sustainable tourism. The UNWTO International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO) was created in 2004 to support the continuous improvement of sustainability and resilience in the tourism sector.
Through systematic monitoring, evaluation and information management, the INSTO programme provides policy-makers, planners, tourism managers and other relevant stakeholders with key tools to create and implement sustainable tourism policies, strategies, plans and management processes.
The INSTO model involves a ‘hosting’ arrangement for each Observatory that allows for ‘co-hosting’ by collaborating organisations. Our co-hosting arrangement with the University of Otago’s Department of Tourism means that we can draw on their expertise and involve students of tourism, community, sustainability and other related subjects in the Project’s monitoring and research projects.
